In a new campaign aimed at women seeking to combat sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is calling for the use of Viagra to be the first-line treatment for a group of young people with erectile dysfunction (ED).
The campaign aims to “teach women to take Viagra,” the FDA said, noting that a drug can “increase the effectiveness of sexual stimulation and help to achieve a better sex life.”
In a press release on Tuesday, the FDA said it will also “recommend the use of Viagra, as it can be used to treat the symptoms of ED, and to decrease the stigma associated with the disease.”
In a statement, the FDA said it was “confident of the effectiveness of Viagra in promoting sexual desire.”
Viagra, sold under the brand name Levitra and Levitra Plus, is the first FDA-approved treatment for ED, and the drug is the first FDA-approved treatment for the disorder, said Dr. John Jenkins, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
“This is a serious, but rare, indication that a drug may be of value to treat sexual desire disorders,” he added.
Viagra and Levitra are two different medicines that treat a variety of sexual problems in men.
Levitra and Viagra are FDA-approved to treat sexual desire in men and women. They are available under different brand names, including Viagra.
The FDA has approved Levitra to treat erectile dysfunction in men and women and to treat sexual dysfunction in men, said Dr. David C. Rosenbloom, a professor of pharmacology at the University of California, San Francisco.
Levitra is also approved to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, the heart condition where blood pressure is higher than normal, and pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with diabetes. It is also available as an oral tablet and an injection in Canada and in the United States.
“This is an indication that Viagra may be a valuable tool in the fight against erectile dysfunction,” Dr. Rosenbloom said.
The FDA said that the drug may also be used to treat the symptoms of premature ejaculation, a condition in which ejaculation occurs too early in the course of sexual activity, in men with a condition called androgenetic alopecia. It is estimated that the prevalence of androgenetic alopecia increases with age, and the condition can last for several months.
“It is important for patients to understand that this is a symptom of a medical condition and to seek advice from a medical specialist if the symptoms persist or worsen,” the agency said.
The FDA also said that there may be a need to use Viagra for ED, including a test that would measure blood pressure and a test that would measure testosterone levels.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men and women.
“This is a serious, but rare, indication that a drug may be of value to treat sexual desire disorders,” Cmdr. Steven P. Kucerle, director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said.
